About Silvermoon

Silvermoon Gallery is more than an art gallery, the project began in 2001, when the first boutique-gallery opened in the Historic Center of San José del Cabo. At that time Armando Sánchez and his wife Rocío had become passionate about mexican art and folklore so in this project they wanted to delve deeper into this world and begin to represent the different ethnic groups that are found throughout the country, which offer endless Mexican art at different levels and forms of expression.

The best way to represent them was to choose the most outstanding pieces and offer them in their galleries, always giving them the right space and clearly telling the story behind them and what they represent.

Jewelry

Coming from a family of jewelry designers, Armando Sánchez begins to develop his designs alongside his gallery project. His line is distinguished by a sophisticated touch, subtle lines and a very defined fondness for light colors.

The collections are made mostly in silver, since it is the representative metal par excellence in Mexico. Pieces with natural cultured pearls, turquoise, topaz, citrine and opal stand out.

The variety of pieces in these collections varies depending on the time of year, since the artisans of the Silvermoon team together with Armando Sánchez work by collections and seasons.
Most of the collections are unique and only one piece of each design is made.

Carlos & Albert

Carlos and Albert’s elegant and creative collection is the fruit of the unique collaboration of two individuals from diverse cultures – Carlos Muñoz from Mexico and Albert Ickenroth from the Netherlands.

His work is a tribute to the different Mexican masters who initiated this style of artistic expression, who with ingenuity and dedication have taken it upon themselves to develop their own unique and daring style.

His fascination with Mexican culture is constantly evident in his exuberant use of colors and patterns that are very representative of Mexico; The two cultures of these master craftsmen are very present in their impeccable works.

Our selection of Carlos & Albert pieces changes depending on the season and the permanent collections they manage. They are a mixture of Bronze, Ceramic, Paper Mache and Fiberglass figures.

Alebrijes

Alebrijes carved from copal wood are popular in the Oaxaca region. The elaboration of these handicrafts is the basis of the economy of the towns of San Martín Tilcajete and San Antonio Arrazola, where many families work carving figures that are then colored with natural pigments.

The Oaxacan Alebrije is a combination of the region’s woodcarving tradition and the technique created by Pedro Linares (Mexico City, 1936).

This craft was introduced in the Oaxaca area in the 1980s thanks to a demonstration workshop held in the State of Mexico.
Linares’ designs were adapted to the copal wood carving technique, as this technique was dominated by artisans in the region.

The adaptation of the Alebrije was perfected by Manuel Jiménez, a native of San Antonio Arrazola.
We have an extensive collection of Alebrijes with different levels of complexity ranging from small sculptures to large human-sized expressions.

Mata Ortiz Ceramics

Mata Ortiz pottery is inspired by the remains found in Casas Grandes in the state of Chihuahua, from the Paquimé culture and one of the most important archaeological centers in northwestern Mexico. The style was spread by Master Craftsman Juan Quezada.

He learned to recreate this incredible pre-Hispanic form of expression and even improved on it, creating forms inspired by the ancient patterns used in the originals, which reflect the way they lived in that region, the gods they worshiped and the animals they hunted.

Silvermoon has a varied collection of the different styles that Quezada developed, as well as other artists from the same school and of the same quality of execution.

Huichol Art

Huichol Art is one of the most representative in Mexico, its demand increased thanks to the complexity of its designs and it is highly sought after by tourist collectors of folk art.

Originating mainly from Jalisco and Nayarit, Huichol art is made with threads of different radiant colors and tiny colored beads, which together bring to life the different symbols and designs that are a combination of the Huichol visions in their ceremonies and the different symbols that they use as a means of expression and that have survived generation after generation.

Our collections have a variety of pieces from different Huichol artists, selected for their quality and complex elaboration.

Trees of Life

A tree of life is a clay sculpture commonly made by hand in central Mexico, mainly in the municipality of Metepec, State of Mexico.

The images depicted in the sculptures were originally used, during the early colonial period, to teach the creation story, according to the Bible, to the natives of the region.

In our collection of the Trees of Life we have pieces from the most outstanding artisans; José Luis Serrano, Hilario Hernández and Tiburcio Soteno. These have taken the elaboration of such complex pieces to a very high level, focusing on the detail and balance of the figures that are embedded in them; highlight religious themes, and life and death.

From Founder
For us is important to preserve the Mexican traditions because as time goes by the artists start getting older, the new generations are trying to find opportunities in different places and the kids only find joy in technological devices. If this continues, soon there won't be any people to create this amazing pieces. This is why Silvermoon provides a space for artists to display their work so that more people are able to see it and fall in love with it.
